WEST HARTLEPOOL MAN IN BATTLE NEWS

The story of a "blitz patrol"

it was the germans who first invented the expression "blitzkrieg" (lightning warfare). they were the first to practice it. the allies, however, were not slow to appreciate the value of blitz tactics both on the ground and in the air, and have now perfected what jerry invented. i
witnessed today another branch of blitz warfare, namely a "blitz patrol" (writes a military observer). the patrol, consisting of two sergeants and ten other ranks of a famous north country regiment, was sent to bring back a prisoner from an orchard where there were known to be enemy. the patrol was split into two groups - one to assault, led by lance sergeant m c brudenell, of 17 oakland avenue, west hartlepool, and one to support, led by lance sergeant e g gallop, of 33 penrhiewtyn, neath, glamorgan. in order to get to the enemy held orchard it was necessary for the patrol to
cross an open field, a distance of about 200 yards. at 3pm, which was zero hour for the attack, the patrol under sergeant brudenell went in quickly across the open field under cover of smoke; meanwhile the section under sergeant gallop covered them with brens and a two-inch mortar.

"I'VE GOT ONE"!

the entire assault group reached the hedge running across the front of the orchard safely. there they paused for a moment to re-form before continuing through the orchard. suddenly one of the patrol shouted, "i've got one!", and out came a jerry with his hands up. "i thought, where there's one there are bound to be more", said sergeant brudenell, "and i set the patrol on to searching the hedgerow. only twenty yards away from the prisoner we had taken we saw three more boche in a dug-out. i shouted at them to come out, and they loosed off a burst of spandau fire at us,
which fortunately missed. i gave them a return burst at point-blank range with my sten, and all three slumped down dead. "next", said brudenell, "we heard screams coming from the entrance to the dug-out, just to the left of the gun, and saw a man lying wounded. then we saw another wounded in the back. he, however, was not giving in, but crawled across the bodies of the others trying to get to the gun".

THE GERMAN'S WARNING

"the route which we were intending to take back passed the corner of a small copse", continued sergeant brudenell, "and as we approached it one of the boche become very nervous and signalled to us not to go that way. i halted the party and asked him what was the matter. he indicated that the germans were going to mortar the copse. "to be on the safe side, i decided to take his advice, and so we kept away from it. this was just as well, as half a minute later, sure enough down came the mortar fire on to the corner of the copse". they rejoined the other half of the patrol, and exactly ten minutes from the time they started, the signaller was able
to pass back the splendid results of the patrol over the air to battalion head-quarters. a "blitz-patrol" indeed! sergeant brudenell has, as a result of his good work since he has been in france, risen from lance- corporal to lance-sergeant. he is 19.

LOCAL MAN ROUNDED UP SNIPERS

it was at the time of some of the bitterest fighting in the sector between tilly and caen when ground was being won, yard by yard, in country where every coppice, every hedge, seemed to hold an enemy strong point, writes a military observer in normandy. at least seven snipers were within 150 yards of where a battalion of a famous north country regiment was fighting. lance sergeant michael charles brudenell, of west hartlepool, and lance corporal a schofield, of rochdale, volunteered to go out under fire in an attempt to round up these snipers. they captured every one and were bringing them back as prisoners when heavy german machine-gun fire forced them into cover. not for six hours could they regain their own lines. then, at 3am, they got in, still escorting the prisoners who probably owe their lives to these two british n.c.o.'s. earlier in the same action sgt brudenell, then a lance corporal, brought in between ten and twenty wounded men in the face
of the enemy. in still earlier fighting he volunteered to go out on three successive patrols to locate german positions, bringing back valuable information in each case. sgt brudenell is the son of mr and mrs j a brudenell, of 17 oakland avenue, west hartlepool, and corporal schofield lives at 71 hamer lane, rochdale. their exploits are but some of those which stands to the credit of their unit as the result of a month's warfare in normandy. sgt brudenell is 19 years old, and has been in the army about a year. he is an old boy of west hartlepool secondary school, and before joining up he was on the railway staff at ferryhill.

MENTIONED IN DISPATCHES

corporal michael c brudenell (20) d.l.i., has been mentioned in dispatches in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in north-west europe. the only son of mr and mrs j a brudenell, of 17 oakland avenue, corporal brudenell has been in the army two years and went to france on D + 6. earlier this year he received a signed certificate from his brigadier congratulating him "on your fine leadership and determination in leading your patrol on the night of december 10-11, 1944. the determination you showed under the most severe weather conditions was worthy of the highest praise".
